(i) - Case studies on Quality Products Linked to Geographical Origin in Balkans

The case studies were carried out by FAO http://www.foodquality-origin.org/eng/resource.html with consultants familiar with the local context and the product, and in collaboration with 2 partners: AGRIDEA www.agridea-international.ch and SEEDEV http://www.seedev.org/index1.htmlorganizations for rural development in Switzerland and Southeastern European countries.

Objectives:

  • to collect information on local experience regarding various types of product in various contexts and geographical regions;
  • to analyse advantages, constraints and success factors regarding actions on origin-linked quality;
  • to understand problems and needs;
  • to develop recommendations on the basis of lessons learned.

The study covered three countries in Western Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Former Yougoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia). The findings and aspects developed in the study apply to the other three countries in Western Balkans – Croatia, Montenegro, and to less extent, Slovenia. The described three products in the study could serve as an example of good practice in developing PDO/PGI or regional labels. Within the study have been identified five priority axes, common to all Western Balkan countries, that need to be addressed in the support of the development of PDO/PGI system in Western Balkans.

(ii) - Assessment of GI potential and its realisation in support of Rural Development in Ukraine

This project is implemented in the framework of the Technical Cooperation Programme of FAO, through a Facility carried on by the Regional office. The aim is to explore the possibilities for investments in an enabling environment for GI to play a major role in rural development. The assessment will be based on the inventory of products suitable to acquire GI label and the potential of Ukrainian GI products on export and domestic markets, taking into account the current institutional framework. 
Expected duration: 4 months, 2010


(iii) Study on the “Advantages, constraints, and key success factors of establishing quality signs linked to the origin and traditions in Albania: the case of typical origin-based products”.

The aim of the study “Advantages, constraints, and key success factors of establishing quality signs linked to the origin and traditions in Albania: the case of typical origin-based products” is to assess the GI products potential by reviewing the information currently available in relation to quality traditional products in Albania and related policies to support their development and preservation, to identify origin-based products and prove their potential for being promoted as GI products (specific characteristics linked to the origin, market potential, producers objectives). For one identified product will be developed a case study.

13) Raki of arbouse from Skrapari
14) Sweet peppers from Shkodra
15) White beans from Dibra
16) White cheese from Permeti
17) White potatoes from Kukesi
